Leave / Benefits Specialist

Pay Rate: $25-$28/hour

Responsibilities include:

Leave of Absences/Accommodations

  • Primary contact regarding potential employee leave of absences and/or accommodation requests
  • Gather facts through communication with employee, management, and when appropriate, medical personnel, regarding the leave or accommodation request so proper approval, eligibility and designation can be determined
  • Identify leave types; ensures accurate coordination with state and federal leave laws, and calculates and monitors leave duration
  • Set up and maintain confidential leave and medical files
  • Maintain record keeping system and coordinate as needed with Payroll for employees to be paid benefit time during leave
  • Maintain consistent contact and timely follow up with the employee and management for status updates
  • Update leave of absence forms, templates, and policies; develop and implement new processes and procedures accordingly


  • Participate in the daily and monthly activities for administration of the company’s self-insured healthcare plan
  • Ensure the accuracy of all benefits enrollments to provide vendors with accurate eligibility information
  • Assist with the open enrollment process, including the distribution of benefits enrollment materials and determination of eligibility
  • Perform quality checks of benefits-related data
  • Assist Team Members regarding health benefits claim issues and plan changes
  • Enroll Team Members with third party health administrator and process life status changes
  • Respond to benefits inquiries from Team Members on plan provisions, enrollments, status changes and other general inquiries
  • Provide necessary reports for allocation/billing of health provider charges
  • Administer the tuition reimbursement program

Knowledge & Skill Requirements:

  • Minimum of three years' experience in leave/benefits administration
  • Associate's degree in Human Resources or related field and/or other leave/benefit related training/certification
  • Strong working knowledge of various federal employment law regulations to include, FMLA, ADA, Pregnancy Disability. Knowledge of specific state employment law regulations regarding leave and accommodation protections, particularly in California and Washington
  • Experience with the administration of self-insured healthcare benefit plans is a plus
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to write reports and routine business correspondence
  • Strong interpersonal/communication skills; display a high degree of emotional intelligence; is accountable and responsive; exercises good judgment in a variety of situations
  • Ability to gather and effectively present detailed information
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
